Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a class action lawsuit accusing the tech giant of privacy infringements through its voice assistant, Siri. The allegations include unauthorized recordings of private conversations and sharing data with third parties without users’ consent. This settlement, awaiting approval from US District Judge Jeffrey White, addresses violations over a period extending from 2014 to the end of 2024. Despite denying the charges, Apple apologized in 2019 following reports of contractors overhearing private interactions during internal reviews.

Eligible class members, potentially numbering in the tens of millions, may receive up to $20 per Siri device. They must declare under oath that their conversations were recorded. In addition to the $95 million, Apple might incur $28.5 million in legal fees, plus $1.1 million for litigation expenses. The agreement mandates Apple to publish a webpage explaining how users can opt-in for Siri’s improvement and confirm the deletion of any pre-October 2019 audio recordings.
