The deployment to Eareckson Air Station on Shemya Island, the closest American military base to Russia, is part of a “force projection operation” that includes two High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS). Increased Russian Military Presence
Recent weeks have seen a spike in Russian military activity near American territory. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) tracked Russian military planes operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone over a four-day period. Additionally, the U.S. Coast Guard observed four Russian Navy vessels, including two submarines, near Point Hope, Alaska.
“It’s not the first time that we’ve seen the Russians and the Chinese flying, you know, in the vicinity, and that’s something that we obviously closely monitor, and it’s also something that we’re prepared to respond to,” said Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.
While these activities have raised concerns, it’s important to note that none of the Russian planes breached U.S. airspace. The Russian vessels that crossed into U.S. waters did so to avoid sea ice, which is permitted under international rules.
Alaska’s Strategic Importance

“These escalating incidents demonstrate the critical role the Arctic plays in great power competition between the U.S., Russia, and China,” said U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska.
The deployment to Shemya Island is not just a response to current threats but also a test of the Army’s rapid deployment capabilities. Maj. Gen. Joseph Hilbert emphasized the importance of such operations for national defense and maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.
