(USNewsMag.com) – On April 14th, the House announced plans to pass bills sanctioning Iran and its proxies following Iran’s April 13th attack on Israel.
With bipartisan support, the House voted on April 15th to pass bills that ensure sanctions on Iran are not being skirted. The bill will also expand the sanctions on Chinese companies that conduct business with Iran’s petroleum sector, restrict Iranian imports, and direct the International Monetary Fund U.S. representatives to oppose financial assistance to Iran. Finally, the bill requests a report from President Biden on Iranian holdings and assets in the United States financial system.
In a statement, House Majority Leader and Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise said the bills are “a comprehensive response” to Iran’s threat and show support for Israel.
House Speaker and Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson said he also plans to hold a vote on aid for Israel. During an April 15th Republican conference meeting, Johnson said he intends to split the supplemental funding legislation passed by the Senate in February that includes funding for both Israel and Ukraine into multiple parts, allowing the aid for Israel and Ukraine to stand alone.
The House could also vote on proposals about other U.S.-designated terrorist organizations such as Hamas. One proposal called for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to be designated as a terror group, with another calling for “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” to be designated as antisemitic.
The sanctions come in response to Iran launching over 350 drones and missiles at Israel on April 13th as a response to Israel’s April 1st airstrike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, that killed some of Iran’s top military officials. With the help of the United States and Israel’s other allies, Israel was able to intercept the “vast majority” of the missiles launched. While the U.S. was involved with intercepting the missiles and drones, Biden said the U.S. would not participate “in any offensive action against Iran.”
