(USNewsMag.com) – Former President Donald Trump is winning over some Democrats with his messaging about immigration.
In a campaign video shared by Trump on Truth Social, Trump says, “They’re coming by the thousands” as migrants from China, Cameroon, and Afghanistan are seen crossing the southern border of the United States. Trump then states, “We will secure our borders” and “restore sovereignty.”
Trump describes the record-high number of border crossings since President Joe Biden took office in January 2012 as an “invasion” designed to transform the very makeup of America.
While the message about migrants continues to resonate with Trump’s base that supported building a wall along the southern border, it is now resonating with some Democrats, too.
A Hispanic small business owner who lives in Eagle Pass, Texas – Gracie Martinez, 52 – said that while she is a Democrat who previously voted for former President Barack Obama, she now supports Trump because of the border.
Another resident of Eagle Pass – teacher Priscilla Hesles, 55 – said the situation at the border changed the small border town, adding that she allegedly had a frightening encounter with migrants during an evening walk.
Chicago-based racial justice activist and Democrat Vetress Boyce voiced her frustration over Biden’s immigration policies that are leaving the people of the city “suffering,” adding that they “have been suffering for over 100 years.”
According to a poll conducted in March by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, two-thirds of those surveyed disapprove of how Biden is handling the border. The two-thirds includes about 4 in 10 Democrats, 55% of black voters, and 73% of Hispanic voters, two key groups of Democratic voters, who say they disapprove of Biden’s handling of the crisis at the border.
Another poll conducted by the Pew Research Center showed that 45% of Americans classify the situation at the border as a crisis, and 32% classify the situation at the border as a major problem.
