(USNewsMag.com) – Republican Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, 77, a critic of former President Donald Trump, claims President Joe Biden made a big mistake by not pardoning Trump.
In his interview on “The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle,” Romney said that, if he were Biden, he would have pardoned Trump “immediately” after the Department of Justice brought the indictments. Romney noted he would have pardoned Trump because it would have made Biden “the big guy” and Trump, the person pardoned, the “little guy.”
Trump faces charges in four criminal indictments in Florida, Georgia, New York, and Washington, D.C.
Romney added that Biden should have “fought like crazy” to prevent the election interference case in New York against Trump from “going forward.”
He called it “an enormous mistake” for Trump and his supporters to attack the legal system. Trump has attacked the judges overseeing the various cases, accusing them of being corrupt, and accused Biden of weaponizing the Department of Justice against his opponent in the 2024 presidential race.
Romney also called out two people considered to be among Trump’s potential vice-presidential picks, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, who both appeared in the Manhattan courtroom to support Trump. Romney called it “demeaning” for people to “try and run for vice president” by showing up at the courthouse and “donning a red tie.”
Those supporting Trump by showing up at the courthouse, such as Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, Florida Rep. Cory Mills, and former Republican presidential candidate and business entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, have spoken out about the witnesses, judges, and prosecutors in Trump’s hush money trial as Trump is under a gag order and prohibited from publicly making statements about them.
Romney, who is not seeking re-election, became the first senator in United States history to vote to remove a president from the same party from office when, during Trump’s first impeachment trial, Romney found Trump guilty of abuse of power. During Trump’s second impeachment trial, Romney also voted to convict Trump for inciting an insurrection on Jan. 6th, 2021.
