(USNewsMag.com) – Former Attorney General William Barr described the hush money case and trial against former President Donald Trump as an “abomination” and believes the former president’s appeal will overturn it.
On Wednesday, June 5th, Barr appeared on “Fox Across America” for an interview and told anchor Jimmy Failla that when the case was first being discussed, he said it “was an abomination” and that he did not even think it would be brought against Trump “because it was so vaporous.” Barr admitted to Failla that he was “surprised” the New York prosecutors went ahead with the case.
Barr also said to consider how the American people would “react” if Trump lost in November “in a very close election” and the case was later overturned, adding that he believes “it will be.”
The guilty verdict on Thursday, May 30th, marked the first time in history that a former U.S. president has been convicted of a felony. Trump was found guilty by a Manhattan jury on all 34 counts against him for falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments meant to bury alleged affairs leading up to the 2016 presidential election. Trump, of course, won that election and went on to serve for four years, during which Barr also briefly served as attorney general before stepping down during Trump’s final weeks.
Barr has maintained that his investigation into the 2020 election found no evidence that would have changed the outcome in the former president’s favor. The determination angered Trump and his allies at the time, who contested the results and President Joe Biden’s victory.
Despite the tumultuous relationship, Barr continues to support Trump even if reluctantly. He has criticized both candidates leading up to their anticipated rematch, calling them “two bad choices,” yet ultimately believes the Republican ticket would “do the least harm to the country.” He said although he may be “playing Russian roulette” with his choice, another Biden term would be “national suicide.”
Trump’s lawyers are scheduled to appeal the guilty verdict. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 11th, just a few days before the Republican National Convention where the former president is expected to be officiated as the GOP nominee.
