(USNewsMag.com) – An Arizona senator recently indicted in the state’s 2020 election interference case and a former representative expelled from office have been elected as members of the Republican National Committee (RNC) for their state.
On Saturday, April 27th, the RNC elected two new members from the Grand Canyon State, both of whom are embroiled in controversy and legal battles: former state Rep. Liz Harris and state Sen. Jake Hoffman.
In a social media post following the RNC announcement, Hoffman said he was “humbled and honored” by the election to become a National State Committeeman for Arizona. Harris also posted about her election to the position and thanked the “grassroots delegates” who voted for her, promising to help the Republican Party win more contests by emphasizing unity through pushing “real, effective election reform.”
Hoffman and 10 other allies of former President Donald Trump were indicted in Arizona on Wednesday, April 24th, for allegedly trying to overturn the state’s results during the 2020 presidential election by sending a letter to former Vice President Mike Pence requesting a delay in the certification of the results. The new wave of prosecutions included co-defendants such as former Trump lawyer Rudy Guiliani; Mark Meadows, the former White House chief of staff; and Boris Epshteyn, a former aide for Trump during his time in office and still one of the former president’s closest advisers.
The Arizona Republican Party called the indictment a “blatant, unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial power” aimed at distracting voters from the “critical policy debates” that should be the focus leading into the 2024 election.
Harris was also embroiled in controversy for ethics violations last year after she invited an insurance agent to testify before Arizona lawmakers after they made unsubstantiated claims about Gov. Katie Hobbs and other public officials. The Republican-controlled Arizona House voted to expel her in April 2023. Harris has also received a lot of backlash for questioning the results of the 2020 presidential election and the 2022 midterm elections in her state.
