What It Takes to Be Your State's Next Congress Person

Constitutional Requirements

Anyone running for the United States Senate must:

  • Be at least 30 years old
  • Be a US citizen for at least nine years
  • Reside in the state in which they run at election time

To run for the United States House of Representatives, you must:

  • Be at least 25 years old
  • Have been a US citizen for at least seven years
  • Live in the state in which you run

Additional Requirements

To get on any state’s ballot, you must meet requirements set by the Federal Election Commission. For an active campaign, you must raise or spend at least $5,000. You must also file a Statement of Candidacy within 15 days of reaching that threshold, either on paper or electronically.
