
Another Mass Shooting Leaves 19 Dead
(USNewsMag.com) – The United States has been grappling with an increase in gun violence that has policymakers on edge. But it isn’t the only nation facing the problem. In fact, more than a dozen people died in two separate attacks in South Africa.
On Saturday, July 9, right around midnight, gunmen entered a bar in Johannesburg and began firing. When it was over, 15 patrons were dead and multiple people had injuries. According to the Associated Press, Lt. Gen. Elias Mawela, the Gauteng province police commissioner, said the cartridges on the scene indicated a group of gunmen were responsible for the massacre. He said all of the victims “were struggling to get out of the tavern.”

The second shooting took place at a bar in Pietermaritzburg when two men went inside and opened fire. At least four people were killed and eight others were injured. The victims were between the ages of 30 to 45 years old.
Kwazulu-Natal Police Commissioner Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi told the AP his officers would work “around the clock” to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa released a statement asking the country to “work together” to help the economic and social conditions of citizens. Further, he called on everyone to stop the illegal firearms trade and “reduce violent crime.”
