(USNewsMag.com) – More than 40,000 hours of surveillance video of events at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, were made available to Tucker Carlson’s producers. On March 3, he revealed that he would start showing clips from the videos the following week.
After considerable discussion over their access to the tapes of the surveillance, the Fox News TV personality claimed on Friday that he would disclose “the results of our investigation” on his program the following Monday, March 6, and Tuesday, March 7.
Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), House Speaker, released the tapes to Carlson, causing an outcry among Democrats in the House. McCarthy said that the decision was consistent with his promise of openness to Republican detractors of his speakership.
New York Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, a Democrat, has accused the speaker of jeopardizing legislators and presenting the Capitol facility with one of the biggest security dangers since 9/11. According to Mr. Schumer, it was clear from McCarthy’s decision to offer the film to Carlson that this hoax was created only to appease MAGA, especially the election deniers, and had nothing to do with the truth.
Several Republicans in the House have sought to slow down the process of making it public. The chairman of the House Administration Oversight Subcommittee, Republican Representative Barry Loudermilk of Georgia, said that his committee is coordinating with the Capitol Police and sergeant-at-arms to ensure that any published film poses no threat to national security.
Many news organizations have criticized McCarthy, expressing worry that the distribution of the tape to Carlson alone would greatly polarize the public regarding the Capitol violence.
McCarthy has justified his stance by saying that the media almost looks envious of Carlson, which is noteworthy given that every journalist relies on getting exclusives on certain stories.
The Speaker claimed he allowed Carlson in to see the tape because the journalist had been requesting access to it. On the other hand, he made assurances that everyone would be able to view the footage.
