Trump Teases “Big Announcement” Coming November 15
(USNewsMag.com) – For nearly two years, Americans have wondered whether former President Donald Trump was going to run for office again in 2024. He campaigned heavily during the midterms, trying to boost the Republican Party so it could take back the majority in Congress. The 45th POTUS made it clear months ago that he would make a decision about whether to throw his hat in the ring again after the 2022 elections.
Well, the midterms are now over. While Republicans didn’t have the showing they necessarily wanted, the former president is still teasing a big announcement.
Trump 2024?
On Monday, November 7, Trump held a rally in Ohio for GOP candidates ahead of the midterms. During the final stretch before people headed to the polls the next day, he hinted at his plans for the future. Politico reported the former POTUS said, “I’m going to be making a very big announcement on Tuesday, November 15.” He intends to hold a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
Can He Win?
One of the biggest questions about a potential Trump run in 2024 is whether he can actually win both the primary and the general elections. There’s no doubt he has a massive following among the GOP base, generating crowds of hundreds of people every time he stops somewhere nearly two years after leaving office. However, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is making his mark on the party. The midterms were terrific for him. As a result, he’s now being considered a possible frontrunner.
DeSantis is so popular that Trump and his team are already launching preemptive attacks on the governor. According to The Guardian, the former president mentioned him on Monday during a flight. He said he didn’t think it would be a good idea for DeSantis to run for higher office in 2024. “I think if he runs he could hurt himself very badly,” the 45th POTUS said. He claimed he knows unflattering things that could hurt the state leader.
In August, attendees of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) took a straw poll that included Trump v. DeSantis. The former POTUS easily beat the governor in the match-up, receiving 69% of the vote.
As for the general election, it’s hard to tell what might happen this far away. But President Joe Biden’s approval ratings are in the toilet. An October Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll between the current and former commanders in chief showed Trump winning 45% to 43%.
