(USNewsMag.com) – Democratic Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib slammed President Joe Biden this week and accused him of being complicit in Palestinian deaths in the Gaza Strip during Israel’s military siege of the territory.
Amid criticism from fellow party members over Tlaib’s own reaction to the Israel/Hamas war in the Middle East, the “Squad” member is criticizing the commander-in-chief and leader of the Democratic Party of “complicity.”
The Michigan representative shared a report on her Instagram page that claims that an airstrike by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in South Lebanon killed three children. Tlaib said Biden’s “silence is deafening” and that his “complicity” is worse. She accused Israel of wiping out “a whole generation.”
After the radical militant Palestinian group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, an estimated 1,400 people died, and a couple hundred more were taken by Hamas as hostages over the border into Gaza. In response to the attack, Israel launched a “complete siege” on the Palestinian territory, resulting in at least 8,500 more deaths among Palestinians.
Tlaib is the only Palestinian-American member of Congress, and she’s been one of a group of several progressive lawmakers to call for a ceasefire by Israel and to press the White House to call for the measure as well.
Not all of her fellow Democrats agree with Tlaib.
She recently received backlash from other Democrats for supporting the pro-Palestinian slogan “from the river to the sea.” Critics of the phrase believe it calls for the total destruction of Israel, referring to the Jordan River on the eastern border of the Jewish state and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. Even Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who considers Tlaib a “friend,” criticized her defense of the slogan.
For openly defending the slogan, Tlaib now faces a possible censure motion in Congress. On Tuesday, she gave another emotional plea for a ceasefire in the conflict.
