(USNewsMag.com) – Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, have declared their intention to legally separate following 18 years of marriage. Trudeau, 51, and Sophie, 48, were married in May 2005.
A legal agreement was signed by the two, according to the prime minister’s office.
The two noted that they continue to have love and respect for each other and then asked for privacy. The Trudeau family will go on a vacation together next week and will share joint custody of their three children, Xavier, 15, Ella-Grace, 14, and Hadrien, nine.
In late 2015, when Trudeau became prime minister at the age of 43, the couple’s fashion sense quickly gained the attention of the media. Sophie was called “the hottest first lady in the world” by the New York Post in October 2015.
The January 2016 issue of Vogue magazine featured a glowing profile of the two, along with photos of them embracing. An accompanying article in the magazine discussed Trudeau’s frequent displays of public affection for Sophie.
For several years, there has been chatter in Ottawa about Justin and Sophie, but nothing has ever made the news about their relationship. Trudeau has always denied rumors about extramarital affairs.
He mentioned in his 2014 autobiography, Common Ground, that their marriage had its highs and lows. In a case of history repeating itself, Trudeau’s father, former prime minister Pierre Trudeau, divorced his wife, Margaret, in 1977.
Since taking office in 2015, the development has been one of Trudeau’s greatest personal struggles, considering his frequent emphasis on the importance of family life.
Party insiders say that Trudeau intends to lead his party into a fourth campaign, which will happen in 2025.
He has been criticized before for his ability to manage domestic and international issues. Those who have been skeptical of Trudeau’s leadership and the gap between his public image and his governing may feel further isolated due to the separation.
