Moderate Democrats Throw Cold Water On Biden’s Latest Political Scheme
(USNewsMag.com) – In the wake of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling, President Joe Biden and Democrats are trying to find the votes to codify abortion protections. The POTUS announced he would support killing the filibuster to do that. Not everyone in his party is on board.
On June 30, Biden spoke at a press conference while on his G-7 trip and said there should be an exception to the filibuster to prevent it from being used to stop an abortion rights bill from passing.
We have to codify Roe v. Wade into law.
And as I said this morning: If the filibuster gets in the way, then we need to make an exception to get it done.

Not everyone wants to get rid of the measure. Democratic Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) are not supportive of killing the filibuster for any reason. An aide to Sinema and a spokesperson for Manchin told Reuters their positions have not changed on the matter.
The Senate tool is used to block or delay a vote on legislation by requiring 60 votes to pass it, instead of the 51 votes that a bill normally needs. Traditionally, the rule wasn’t used to block every single bill that was introduced into the chamber, but in the hyperpartisan atmosphere lawmakers just assume legislation will be filibustered and they will need 60 votes to pass it. However, that has created a situation where both Democrats and Republicans abuse the measure to block the Senate from working properly by allowing the minority party to rule.
Do you support the filibuster or would you like to see the Senate start working normally again?
