(USNewsMag.com) – A super PAC, Make America Great Again Inc., has filed an ethics complaint to Florida’s Commission on Ethics against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The 15-page complaint alleges that DeSantis has been running a “shadow presidential campaign.” The complaint says that if DeSantis is running for the 2024 Republican nomination for president, he should resign as governor of Florida. The letter states that DeSantis is violating Florida election laws with his Friends of Ron DeSantis PAC fundraising. The letter also states that his book tour, and travel to states that hold early primaries is also in violation of Florida law, steps that appear he is running without actually declaring he is running.
The letter also mentioned the super PAC “Never Back Down,” which was formed recently by Ken Cuccinelli, a former Department of Homeland Security official under Trump, as well as other committees that are trying to recruit DeSantis to run for president.
In the last month DeSantis has traveled to Nevade, Iowa, New York and California promoting his new book. He is also scheduled to speak in New Hampshire in April.
Taryn Fenske, DeSantis’ Communications Director, issued a statement referring to this as another attack from Trump that is motivated by politics and is frivolous.
The complaint is seen as an escalation by allies of Trump against a potential 2024 rival.
The complaint, once it is received, will need to be reviewed by the Florida Commission on Ethics’ lawyers trying to decide if the allegations in the complaint are within the jurisdiction of the commission. Then the complaint goes before an investigator. A probable cause hearing would follow. The board of the Florida Commission on Ethics only meets 8 times a year.
DeSantis has not announced he is running for the 2024 Republican nomination for president, though it has been speculated he will announce his candidacy after the end of the Florida legislative session in May.
