(USNewsMag.com) – As sales of Bud Light decline for a sixth straight week, a new beer is poised to take its place atop the sales charts. The Mexican beer, Modelo Especial, is set to be the world’s number one beer.
The week of May 20 saw sales of Bud Light fall 25.7 percent while sales of Modelo Especial increased 9.2 percent. Bud Light was not the only Anheuser-Busch product to continue to see a decline in sales, as Budweiser sales declined 11.2 percent, Michelob Ultra sales declined 6.5 percent, Busch Light sales declined 5.2 percent and Natural Light sales declined 4.9 percent for the week ending May 20.
If that sales track holds, Modelo will be the new number one beer.
This is the first time since the beer launched in 1982 that it has surpassed Bud Light, according to Bump Williams, who runs the consulting firm, Bump Williams Consulting.
Both brands are owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, however, Modelo Especial is controlled in the U.S. by Constellation Brands.
Modelo Especial is not the only competitor of Bud Light to see a rise in sales amid the Bud Light boycott. Yuengling saw sales of Yuengling Flight increase by 32 percent for a four-week period ending May 20. Miller Lite, Coors Light as well as Pabst Blue Ribbon have also seen an increase in sales in the double digits.
Sales of Bud Light, as well as other products owne-d by Anheuser-Busch have declined since April 1 when transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney shared partnership posts with her and Bud Light with the 11 million followers of her social media accounts. In-store sales across the country fell 24.6 percent for just the week ending May 13. Anheuser-Busch stocks were selling on May 31 for an eight-month low of $53 per share.
According to Forbes, over the last two months the company has lost $26 billion in market capitalization.
