(USNewsMag.com) – Due to safety concerns following the Bud Light scandal, transgender actor and social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney has left the United States for Peru.
A San Diego, California, native, 26-year-old Mulvaney is a male actor who was in the touring production of The Book of Mormon.
Mulvaney became an instant sensation after his video diary, Days of Girlhood, which chronicled his “transition” from male to female during the pandemic, received millions of views. He currently has over 10 million followers on TikTok and almost 2 million on Instagram.
According to a Newsweek article, since sharing his transgender journey, Mulvaney has enjoyed lucrative partnerships with such brands as CeraVe, Crest, InstaCart, Kate Spade KIND Snacks, KitchenAid, Rent the Runway, and Ulta Beauty, to name just a few.
Mulvaney’s recent collaboration with Bud Light increased his public visibility, thrusting him into the spotlight. Before the basketball finals of March Madness, Mulvaney shared a sponsored Bud Light contest on Instagram. The backlash was quick, as people questioned the brand’s decision to partner with Mulvaney.
As the post went viral, people started sharing videos of themselves dumping the beer. Singer Kid Rock expressed his disgust by shooting Bud Light cans on camera.
Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth defended the collaboration with Mulvaney, stating their primary focus was to unify people, not create division. The brand has a history of supporting LGBTQ+ organizations and events.
Despite their intentions, Anheuser-Busch has lost billions of dollars in market value since its partnership with Mulvaney. They declined to reach out to her after the negative backlash. Mulvaney believes the lack of public support from the company is worse than not hiring a trans person. In his opinion, this permitted customers to display transphobia and hatred.
Mulvaney expressed shock at the negative backlash he received from the BudLight video. This experience informed his decision to visit Peru and enjoy solitude and reflection, which he shared on social media.
