Manchin Suggests the Unheard of in Washington: Compromise

(USNewsMag.com) – The Democratic Party is still battling it out over the so-called human infrastructure bill. Moderate Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) recently threw another wrench in the left’s plans.

According to reports, Manchin is allegedly seeking to cap the income threshold for families to qualify for the expanded child tax credit at $60,000. The left wants to increase the tax credit from $2,000 to $3,600 and deposit it directly in the bank accounts of families, like what the administration is currently doing. Manchin is also reportedly pressing for a work requirement for low-income Americans to meet before they can qualify for increased government assistance. The senator has been trying to reduce the cost of the bill for months. He believes the $3.5-trillion price tag is far too large.

The position on the child tax credit is not one that Democrats usually hold, but if true, the senator is once again showing his desire to take Republicans’ positions into consideration. Republicans aren’t against child tax credits, former President Donald Trump even increased the amount families receive. However, they have expressed concerns that expanding the social program will cause more Americans to stop working.

Manchin and Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) are the lone Democrats trying to reduce the cost of the spending bill. Without their votes, the left won’t be able to pass it using budget reconciliation.
