(USNewsMag.com) – Crime in Queens, New York, has soared in the last couple of years. For the 12 months ending on February 27, there was a 58% increase in crime over the previous year. That has not gotten much better in the months since, according to residents. The violence has now taken another life.
On November 13, Esvin Vasquez, 23, was on his way home from work at a furniture warehouse when he stopped at a BP gas station. While there, he somehow got caught up in a fight between two groups of people.
MD Sheikh, an employee at the store, saw the incident unfold. He told WABC there were 10 or 12 people fighting, and Vasquez fell onto the ground. That’s when someone started beating him with a board that they’d removed from a nearby construction site. The store worker called the police. First responders rushed the man to the hospital, where he was treated for severe head injuries. Unfortunately, hospital personnel was unable to save him from the massive trauma suffered during the beating.
The brutal murder of Esvin Vasquez is another example of the utter disregard for human life. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time and paid the price of the lawlessness on our streets. Our prayers go out to his family.
We need to regain control of our streets. https://t.co/xKlwHvpG8V

Vasquez came to the US from Guatemala a year ago. He was working and sending money home to support his wife and one-year-old son. Now, his family is forced to move on without him, and his child will grow up fatherless because crime is so out of control in NYC.
