(USNewsMag.com) – While Bill Maher enjoyed the “Barbie” film, he also criticized it for being preachy and man-hating.
The movie, which has grossed over $1 billion at the box office and scored positive reviews from critics and filmgoers, didn’t exactly strike a chord with Maher, who took to Twitter to post his thoughts.
The talk-show host and comedian shared his 365-word review with his ten million followers. Many people laughed and commented that they wouldn’t read his long “diatribe.” Some commented that a man criticizing a woman was the point of the movie.
The Greta Gerwig-directed film has been a box office hit since its release in theaters on July 21 alongside the more serious Oppenheimer, which focuses on the American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his part in creating the atomic bomb.
Compared to Oppenheimer, Barbie is a pink, fluffy confection of a film. A varied assortment of self-assured, independent, and accomplished women—including Barbie—live in the matriarchal civilization of Barbieland. The Kens indulge in leisure activities at the beach.
Barbie places more value on her independence and female pals than a tighter bond with Ken, who is only content when she is around.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling play Barbie and Ken in the movie and explore the reality outside Barbieland, which surprises them with its differences.
The movie has been interpreted in multiple ways, including as a story about motherhood, the relationship between mothers and daughters, and the struggle of being a woman in an allegedly male-dominated society.
Maher disagreed with the movie’s emphasis on patriarchy and considered it outdated. He pointed out that last year, women filled 45% of the 449 board seats in Fortune 500 companies, making the Mattel board a close reflection of the country.
Maher believed that criticizing the movie was not a conservative viewpoint. He concluded that he’s not out of step; he’s living in the present day, unlike Barbie.
