Liz Cheney Says Donald Trump May Be Subject To “Criminal Penalties”

(USNewsMag.com) – The January 6 commission continues to investigate the 2021 US Capitol attack, calling several witnesses to provide testimony and documentation in order to piece together everything that happened. Republican Representatives Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) sit on the bipartisan committee. However, neither of these leaders fall into former President Donald Trump’s camp. Cheney’s ire became especially clear during a recent Wyoming legislature meeting.

On December 1, the Wyoming legislature addressed former President Donald Trump’s alleged desire to debate commission members. Cheney firmly responded by suggesting that he must proceed under oath if Trump wants a discussion.

The Republican leader also threatened to make him face “criminal penalties for every false word he speaks” during the debate.

Cheney went on to talk about the former president and how she feels he misled Americans by making false claims about the 2020 general election. Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) jumped in to say that “no one is off-limits” to a subpoena from the committee, suggesting the statement may even extend to the former president.

Republicans who support Trump, including Representative Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA), see both Cheney and Kinzinger as traitors to the party. Green recently accused the committee of engaging in a “we hate Trump mission” in an interview with MTG.

Only time will tell whether the January 6 commission decides to call the former president to the stand for his testimony. Still, the fact that they seem so ready to assume the worst is concerning. It also aligns with Trump’s persistent worry about being targeted by left-leaning politicians who only want to sabotage his efforts.
