Kamala Harris Thinks Sanctions Will Stop Putin, Despite Consensus Among Experts Who Disagree

(USNewsMag.com) – On Sunday, February 20, a reporter asked Vice President Kamala Harris why the administration wasn’t imposing sanctions on Russia immediately. She claimed the purpose of the sanctions is deterrence. Foreign policy experts disagreed the measures would be successful – and they were right.

The day after Harris made the remarks, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree supporting the independence declarations by eastern Ukrainian leaders in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Hours after his announcement, he reportedly ordered Russian troops to cross into Ukraine to occupy the regions.

President Joe Biden issued a number of sanctions in the wake of Putin’s orders. Two Russian banks will no longer be allowed to access money from Western banks. Americans aren’t permitted to do business in the regions occupied by Russian troops. The Treasury Department has also said it will impose sanctions on important Russians and others within Putin’s inner circle. Attorney Olivier Dorgans who specializes in economic sanctions doesn’t believe Biden’s go far enough. Russian expert Andrew Lohsen, with the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said the sanctions aren’t strong enough to convince Russia to change its path.

The moves by the Russian military proved Harris was wrong. Putin doesn’t care about sanctions, he seems to have much bigger plans.
