(USNewsMag.com) – Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) aren’t always the most popular within their parties. The lawmakers often cross party lines to negotiate with the other side on issues for which they feel passionately. Now, the two lawmakers are setting a new precedent when it comes to political endorsements.
On February 6, Manchin and Murkowski sat down with CNN’s “State of the Union” host Jake Tapper for an interview. The West Virginia Democrat called his Republican colleague a “great friend” and endorsed her in the 2022 Alaska Senate race. He called it “hypocritical” to work with fellow lawmakers every day but when an election rolls around, he’s supposed to be their rival just because of their party affiliation. Manchin previously endorsed Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) during her 2020 reelection campaign.
"I'm endorsing my dear friend Lisa Murkowski. Alaska could only be so lucky to have her continue to serve them," says Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin on GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski's bid for reelection. #CNNSOTU pic.twitter.com/k9dI6XNwci

Murkowski returned the favor and said she would endorse Manchin the next time around. The two lawmakers agreed it was the right thing to do to endorse each other since they enjoy working with one another. Manchin pointed out it just makes sense to support colleagues with whom he’s accomplished a lot.
The senators’ actions are showing the country how politicians can cross party lines and work with one another. They believe it’s the best way to pass laws and help the American people.
Do you agree with the senators?
