(USNewsMag.com) – Former President Donald Trump took to social media June 6, speaking out after his legal team met with officials from the Department of Justice June 5 regarding the classified documents probe.
After writing a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland in May requesting a meeting to discuss the investigation being led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, Trump’s attorneys, Lindsey Halligan, John Rowley and James Trusty, met June 5 for an hour with the Department of Justice. Smith is leading the investigation into whether after the 2020 election Trump interfered with the transfer of power as well as the investigation in the classified documents discovered at Mar-a-Lago. It remains unclear if Smith was present during the meeting.
The meeting has led to speculation that Smith’s investigation into the classified documents discovered in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home could be coming to a close.
On June 6, Trump wrote several posts on his social media platform, Truth Social, regarding the meeting and investigation. In the posts he said the investigations were a way to target him to try to influence the 2024 election. He stated the investigations were the “greatest witch hunt of all time!”
In one post he stated, “How can DOJ possibly charge me,” and he went on to say that he had not done anything wrong. He also drew comparisons between the way his investigation into classified documents is being handled compared to Biden’s investigation. He also mentioned the investigation into classified documents discovered in the possession of former Vice President Mike Pence who was cleared of any wrongdoing during the first week of June.
On June 6, House Judiciary Committee Chairman and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan also asked for Garland to give the committee an “unredacted copy of the memorandum” which outlines the scope of Smith’s investigations. Jordan has requested information from the Department of Justice regarding the FBI staff members involved with the investigation into the classified documents.
