(USNewsMag.com) – When former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) resigned in disgrace in August 2021, Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul took over. Less than a year after taking office, the new governor is running to keep the seat – and she’s facing a challenger from her own party.
On Tuesday, February 8, the New York Working Families Party announced it planned to endorse candidate Jumaane Williams. The progressive party said Hochul’s challenger is someone who will fight for the working people of the state, including for health care and schools. Williams released a statement afterward saying he was honored by the endorsement.
Throughout my career of taking on the powerful to create change, @NYWFP has been with me on the side of political courage & conviction—not convenience.
We’ve fought & won many battles before, & I’m honored to have their support as we work to bring transformational change to NY. https://t.co/9ZuJSEhe2G

Williams isn’t just a fringe candidate, he’s being endorsed by high-profile Progressives. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and ally Nina Turner have also given him a nod. The former Ohio state senator said Williams understands “the needs of the poor, working poor and barely-middle class.” In 2018, the 2022 gubernatorial candidate ran against Hochul for the lieutenant governor’s seat on actress Cynthia Nixon’s ticket.
Although Hochul has raised more than $20 million, she could have a hard time washing off the stink of Cuomo. Williams isn’t her only problem. US Rep. Thomas Suozzi (D-NY), a three-term congressman, is also running for office. It looks like the new governor is going to have a tough fight ahead of her.
