(USNewsMag.com) – During a Dec. 5 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, FBI Director Christopher Wray stated that since the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, the terror threat facing the United States has reached unprecedented levels. Wray’s response came after South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham asked him to describe the “threat matrix” currently facing the United States.
Wray stated that during his career, he has “never seen a time where all the threats, or so many of the threats, are elevated” at the same time.
Graham stated that before 9/11, “all the lights were blinking red.” He added that “all of us missed it.” He then asked Wray if he saw “multiple blinking red lights out there.”
Wray responded that he currently sees “blinking red lights everywhere.” Wray responded, saying that since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, “the threat level has gone to a whole ‘nother level.” The comments during the hearing were similar to what Wray said in October when he told members of the Senate that the Oct. 7 attack would “serve as an inspiration” in ways not “seen since ISIS launched its so-called caliphate.”
The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice have also issued bulletins to local, state, and federal law enforcement about the potential for an increase in calls for attacks during the holiday season due to the Israel-Hamas war.
In October, Attorney General Merrick Garland said threats against Jewish, Muslim, and Arab communities in the U.S. had increased after the start of the Israel-Hamas war. In November, the number of attacks by Iran-backed proxy groups on U.S. military bases overseas also increased. Since Oct. 17, the Pentagon has confirmed at least 74 attacks on U.S. troops stationed in Iraq and Syria.
On Dec. 1, a 16-year-old was arrested after Las Vegas police and the FBI found the suspect to have terrorist propaganda and components used to build an explosive device. The suspect was arrested after allegedly making social media posts about his plan for “lone wolf operations in Las Vegas against the enemies of Allah.”
