(USNewsMag.com) – In a letter dated April 11, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee Jim Jordan issued a subpoena to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for its suspected targeting of orthodox Catholics.
Jordan concluded that the Committee now knows that the FBI used a minimum of one covert agent to conduct their study based on the little material provided by the Bureau to the Committee. The FBI advocated contacting Catholic parishes in order to cultivate sources within the leadership of the church and clergy who might provide information about religious practices in the United States. In light of these alarming revelations, the Committee has decided to issue a subpoena in order to compel the FBI’s complete participation.
Documented advice from the Field Office of the FBI in Richmond to infiltrate organizations of conservative Catholics who observe the Latin Mass and oppose the Second Vatican Council was released on January 23, 2023. The pamphlet argued that left-leaning organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) facilitate and advocate violence.
The local FBI office sees an opportunity to educate the congregation on the symptoms of radicalization and recruit them as suspicious behavior tripwires in another part of the paper.
This new revelation is shocking and further supports the committee’s demand for all relevant FBI documents. Documents released so far reveal how the FBI approached Catholic churches in an effort to recruit them as informants.
Critics say the politically motivated FBI is unfairly harassing conservatives and Christians because of their beliefs. In one instance, the FBI searched the home of a pro-life Catholic parent who was later found he wasn’t guilty of breaking the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act.
The local FBI office subsequently said it was revoking the memorandum because it did not live up to the bureau’s rigorous standards.
Christopher Wray, the director of the FBI, has insisted that the government agency is politically neutral in its implementation of the law, stating instead that the bureau will adhere to the facts anywhere they may lead, regardless of who is involved.
