(USNewsMag.com) – Lori Vallow Daybell, an Idaho mother, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering her children, 16-year-old Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow. The kids were last seen alive in 2019, and their remains were found in June 2020. Vallow Daybell was also sentenced for conspiring to murder her husband’s first wife, Tammy Daybell.
The judge ordered that those sentences be served consecutively, with two extra life sentences and a 10-year grand theft sentence to be served at the same time.
Her conviction in May included two counts of first-degree murder and three counts of conspiracy.
In a statement read by prosecutors on Monday, Colby Ryan, Tylee and JJ’s older brother, mentioned that Tylee and JJ brought a lot of positivity into this world.
Judge Steven W. Boyce considered the defendant’s lack of criminal record the most important factor in determining the sentence. He also mentioned that the defendant was now convicted of the most serious charges, and showing no remorse was the most serious offense.
He noted that the worst type of crime is a mother killing her own children. Vallow Daybell maintained her innocence, but according to a DNA expert who testified for the state, a strand of hair found on the remains covered with duct tape at the crime matched the mother’s DNA profile. The children were found to have been burned, mutilated, dismembered, and buried.
Prosecutor Rob Wood requested several fixed life terms without parole for Vallow Daybell, the maximum sentence. Wood argued that Daybell had betrayed her children’s trust.
Vallow Daybell pointed to her religious beliefs and explained that Jesus told her that her children were happy and busy in heaven. She also said accidental deaths happen.
Chad Daybell will face a separate trial in April 2024 on two felony counts of conspiracy to commit destruction. He entered a plea of not guilty.
