Alec Baldwin Claims He Never Pulled Trigger in 'Rust' Shooting

(USNewsMag.com) – On December 2, ABC aired an interview between actor Alec Baldwin and George Stephanopoulos. It was the first time the actor spoke publicly about the October shooting on the set of his movie “Rust” that left cinematographer Halyna Hutchins dead and another injured. His interview left some viewers scratching their heads.

During the interview, Baldwin claims he was handling the gun and Hutchins was directing him on where to point it. He claimed that he cocked the gun and released the hammer but never put his finger on the trigger. When Hutchins fell to the ground, he said he thought she suffered a heart attack.

Attorney Lisa Torraco, who is representing Assistant Director Dave Halls, backed up Baldwin’s claims. She claimed her client has always maintained the actor didn’t pull the trigger. “His finder was never in the trigger guard,” she told ABC News.

However, experts aren’t sure Baldwin is telling the truth. Several gun experts have said the only way that’s possible is if there was a mechanical defect in the weapon. But they also say that would’ve almost certainly been obvious before the actor used the weapon. Gun expert Stephen Gutowski wrote an op-ed in USA Today saying he thinks a more plausible explanation is that Baldwin already depressed the trigger, and when he released the hammer, it caused the gun to go off.
